El nombre sufrió diversos cambios a
través del tiempo, pero sin modificar sus
partes esenciales como a continuación
se describe: Chakan-Peten, ChakanPutun, Chakan-Poton, Potonchan,
Champutun y Champotón.
Su etimología proviene de la lengua
maya: Chakán “sabana”y Putum, que es
una modificación de Peten; “región o
comarca”, por lo que significa “región o
comarca de la sabana”.
Limita al norte con los municipios de
Campeche y Hopelchén, al sur con el
municipio de Escárcega, al este con el municipio de Calakmul y al oeste con
el municipio de Carmen y el Golfo de
México.
El municipio cuenta con suficientes
atractivos naturales, edificaciones
históricas y arquitectónicas de todo tipo
lo cual atrae a muchos visitantes y esto
representa un importante factor en el
desarrollo económico para convertirse,
en poco tiempo, en un destino
